The mechanism of aging is not well known. The aging rate and lifespan are believed to be determined by responses to environmental conditions as well as genetic factors. Therefore, we will clarify whether the lifespan and aging rate of Caenorhabditis elegans differ on the ground and in space. If its lifespan in space is longer or shorter than that on the ground, we will investigate whether that is due to microgravity or space radiation. Further, we will explore novel longevity genes that are expressed after a specific period of time in space. We will also study how insulin signaling affects the lifespan and aging rate in space. Finding novel longevity genes could lead to the development of genomic drug discovery for intervention in aging and age-related diseases in humans.
