It is important for organisms to maintain homeostasis on the ground. The microgravity environment has various effects on human health. For example, astronauts undergo a significant decrease in bone mineral density during a space mission, but the precise molecular mechanisms responsible for such changes in bone structure are unclear. To study bone homeostasis, we have established osteoclast- and osteoblast-specific medaka transgenic lines, and conducted two experiments in the International Space Station (Chatani et al. Sci Rep 2015, Chatani et al. Sci Rep 2016). Our results showed the activation of osteoclasts and an increased mRNA expression level of glucocorticoid-related genes. Due to the outcome in space experiments, we plan to develop research on bone homeostasis regulated by gravity.
